If you’re an adventurer like many people are nowadays, you’ve definitely considered sailing at least once in your life, and the prospect of a boat vacation attracts you a lot. Escape from everything, from the hustle and bustle of the city and navigate until sunset is a captivating concept. Even if you have never set foot on a sailing ship, there are still possibilities for you to spend a wonderful holiday.
Sailing is an expression of freedom. The boat that is under your control and moves with the wind, the sound of the waves as they go under the boat, everything is in harmony. Many people become addicted to this, and there is really no doubt about why. A sailboat is very different from any other type of boat, because it does not use a motor to get the propulsion. It simply moves using the wind. Without going into the details of many experts, I will present the main components of a sailboat.
The sails are the parts that actually give the boat the name, and are used to transform the power of the wind into “fuel” for the boat. They are made of Dacron or nylon, materials that are more resistant to salt water and to the sun. The mainsail is the most important of all, and is connected to a high pole called the mainmast.
The trees are usually hollow and made of light material such as aluminum or light wood. They must also be strong, so these are the two main qualities that the “must” must have: lightness and strength. Ropes or lines are used to manipulate sails, by raising or cutting them.
As for the best navigation positions, there are too many and it would take an eternity to show up. From coastal Florida to the incredible beauty of the Caribbean, you have a wide selection at your disposal. Not to forget the Mediterranean Europe, in countries like Italy, France, Spain, Greece, etc.
As for navigation instructions, there is no way around it. You have to do it with an experienced captain or an experienced crew, people who will give you high quality lessons. If you plan to go alone or with your family, you need to know what you are doing. Not only that, you have to know how to effectively navigate your boat, but you also need to know what to do if, for example, an impending storm approaches.
Of course, you can always decide for a cruise on board an experienced crewed boat, without buying or renting your boat. It is your decision, of course, and depends on the degree of privacy you wish to have while browsing. The majority prefer to turn without having to learn the skills to do it by themselves, while enthusiasts spend their lives around it.
Many people say that there is nothing that compares to sailing. For example, the beauty of the Caribbean islands is much more fascinating when you go around them. Well, at least that’s what everyone says. In the end, it’s all a matter of perspective though. People who like to surf are generally people who like adventure, like freedom and enjoy being in close contact with nature, the sea and, ultimately, their inner selves. Enjoying a sunrise or a sunset while you are in the middle of the sea, with only the ocean in sight, seeing the bored gulls fly, is a unique feeling, no doubt. And if I had to make a top 10 list of things to do in my life, sailing would definitely be on that list.
